Tuesday 28th February ~ DJ Cameron (95bFM)
You've heard his tastes smeared all over bFM's Thursday 1-4 show, everything from Crass and The Clash to blissed out dub and reggae tunes, blended in with a healthy bottle of soul and hip-hop, all augmented by his trademark giggle and excellent human nature. Looking forward to this debut!
7pm - late / Free entry

Wednesday 29th February ~ DJ Elijah Won
Guess what! As the Holy Bible predicted, Elijah has returned to live amongst us. As a killer DJ. Thank the Lord he's chosen us to be his followers. No, don't worry, it's not all old parchments of rules and speeches he'll be reciting, in fact he's gathered together quite a record collection! With a taste-palette ranging from Metallica to "that rap crap", via Jesus and Mary Chain and Kyuss... it's gonna be alright!
7pm - late / Free entry

Thursday 1st March ~ Darryn Harkness (Live improv)
Last time Darryn took over the Dawn like this, he rattled chains against old artillery shells, yelled at taxidermy penguins, shook mystic crystals whilst staring into the eyes of every person in the bar, and looped-n-dubbed a tirade about spilled oil whilst screaming and laughing hysterically. So, naturally, we've invited him back. Don't miss him (on at half nine) with guest DJs the exotical Duke Wellington and the ever predictable Mr Crawley.
8pm - close / Free entry

Friday 2nd March ~ Luckless (live)
A mix of bitter and salty instrument sounds, with honey-laced melodies and loop pedals, is brought to us by the new anti/folk indie/rock duo, Luckless!

Luckless adds loop pedals and atmospherics to an unvarnished vocal sound to create crafted, layered music with an unrefined, naïve edge. References to artists such as PJ Harvey, Iron & Wine and Cat Power abound. Four track tape recorders, old organs and valve amplifiers have created warmth throughout Luckless’s otherwise rough, raw arrangements. Some Luckless songs groove, while others take pause and reflect. Holding it all together is a sense of detachment and isolation...

Find out more this Friday, when Luckless are joined by the delightful DJ Ben Paul and his Jazz Hut, The Soulful Hayden East & our dear wayward scamp The Young Pretender!
8pm - 2am / $5 entry

Saturday 3rd March ~ Exciting Secret Band!
Can't say much about this - but it is exciting. This band is definitely NOT called Badtrousers, though. This mystery band - who have charmed us all throughout the years... - will be joined by the very able DJ Dylan Cherry & friends!

A Very Exciting Week

Tuesday 21st February ~ DJs Aaron & Hannah
Gosh I love it when Aaron and Hannah join forces for a wee set at The Golden Dawn (Tavern of Power). In case you've been sleeping under a polystyrene rock, Aaron Yap is the host of Psychic Glands, and Hannah Sarney is the co-host of Jukebox Parlour on 95bFM - one show designed to lull and entrance, and the other exists to pep up your Saturday... throw the two together and magic literally flies. Bzzzzzt.
7pm - late / Free entry

Wednesday 22nd February ~ DJ Bobby Johnson
Ladies and germs, put your hands together for DJ Bobby Johnson. Why? Because this is likely to be his final outing at the Tavern of You-know-what. We're putting a colon with a dash and a closed bracket to demonstrate our sadness at his forthcoming departure from our lands, for he has truly been the Party Master. Meanwhile, before the tears fall, let us come party with him one more time this Wednesday. Also, have you tried our corn on the cob? Pretty good eh.
7pm - late / Free entry

Thursday 23rd February ~ Yam Jams DJs
Thanks to the powers of the short month, those scamps at Yam Jams are back sooner than you might expect! But it's fair to say that's a bloody good thing... Yam Jams are amazer-ing! If a healthy blending of jazz, soul, indie classics, rock'n'roll, hip hop and Peruvian psychedelia is your thing, Yam Jams are your men. And what men they are. Long live Yam Jams.
8pm - close / Free entry

Friday 24th February ~ Storehouse Blues (live)
Storehouse Blues are back in the chapel! Our favourite blues / gospel / swamp / calypso family are set to take your Friday by the horns and sing it into submission.

Also appearing this Friday, from 7pm: DJ Mound of Sound (aka Mr Daniel Mañetto), spinning what he describes as a set driven by "Catholic tastes". Expect Allen Toussaint rubbing shoulders with Suicide, Pere Ubu, The Paragons and more! Then, from midnight onward, let The Professor (95bFM) take you on a hurly-burly rollercoaster ride for two soggy hours of rock AND roll.
8pm - 2am / $5 entry

Saturday 25th February ~ Simon Comber & Paquin (live)
Simon Comber plays folk rock tunes with a folk rock trio, mixing variously tuned guitars with narratives about all manner of real stuff. Recently back from his first tour of the U.S and soon off to Australia for the first time.

Paquin's singular brand of shoegaze/electro/pop just plain rules. Synths, guitars, stereo ampage, internal lyrical wanderlust.

Joining Paquin & Mr Comber this week will be DJ English Jake, a man well known for his ability to appreciate both jazz AND rhythm & blues, SIMULTANEOUSLY. When he's not cutting shapes with his killer band Thee Rum Coves, English Jake is getting ready for this: his very first Golden Dawn DJ set. Amen brother!
8pm - late / $5 entry

Sunday 26th February ~ Andrea Balencey (Mexico)
French-Mexican singer and multi-instrumentalist Andrea Balency’s songs breathlessly defy classification. Connecting the dots between the folkloric music of Mexico and Argentina, traditional French lounge singing (Chanson), hip-hop, jazz and experimental electronica, her songs paints a whole gallery worth of sonic oil painting, representative of stories as diverse and lived as her young life.

Balency was born in Paris in the late eighties. Schooled in classical music during her childhood, at seventeen she began writing her own original songs. Having lived in (and played music in) France, Mexico and Argentina, she’s played solo, worked in combos, and even spent a two year stint in highly respected Mexican art rock band Juan Manuel Torreblanca. Along the way she recorded her first EP, and has been steadily working towards her second EP Lover, and her debut album, due for release mid 2012.

We are very excited to be hosting Andrea for an early show this Sunday! With DJ support from Nick "All the music of the world" D, this promises to be a verrrrrry special show indeed.

Click HERE to check out Andrea's stunning cover of El Guincho's Lycra Mistral! 5pm - late / $5 entry

We Are Your Secret Admirer

Tuesday 14th February ~ CC’s Valentine’s Day Special

CC! 7pm - late

Wednesday 15th February ~ DJ Jack Beanstalk
The big man is back on campus, and he's ready to P-A-R-T-Y. That spells party. Are you ready to party? What is partying anyway? I've never quite understood its exact meaning as a verb, but I think you just kinda know when you're doing it. Words aside, we'll see you here for some good times. 7pm - late

Thursday 16th February ~ DJ Aroha & friends
Aroha is one of our fair city's favourite DJs, so it's about time she came and had a little spin, eh? Part dirty rocker, part electronica enthusiast, and full time party person, we're excited to finally have Aroha behind the wheel!8pm - close

Saturday 18th February ~ DJs Andrew Tidball, Talor & Dave
What else is left to say about Mr Andrew Tidball? He's the Don! Owner operator at our web-friends www.cheeseontoast.co.nz! And with a stack of records taller than Jack, who is DJing earlier in the week. And is super tall. It iz party time!
8pm - 11pm

DJs Talor Made & Dave Funbags are two scamps you'll recognise from about the place. They don't actually have homes, so we've taken them to letting them sleep in amongst our kegs in exchange for playing Jimi Hendrix records late at night for us. Do them a favour and dance, they'll feel better about their lives... 11pm - close

Sunday 19th February ~ "Wine & Sound" with Jo Burzynska
The Golden Dawn invites you to discover the surprising synergies between wine and sound in this multi-sensory tasting experience hosted by NZ Herald wine columnist and sound artist, Jo Burzynska (aka Stanier Black-Five).

Through pairing a diverse selection of our favourite wines with a curious variety of musics, Jo will explore the harmonies and discords that can be created by different combinations and illustrate how the perception of a wine’s flavours can be altered by what we’re listening to when we drink it.

This truly unique event is a first for The Golden Dawn (Tavern of Power)... Don’t miss Wine & Sound - seats are limited. Tickets $25 (including all wine samples) from www.undertheradar.co.nz ~ 8pm - late

Friday 10th February ~ DJs Steve Newall & Jamie Newman
Our good chum Mr Steve Newall is once again tending to the decks with his almost too-healthy collection of crunchy vinyl. Expect rollicking good times to farewell another really short, but not necessarily easy week. 7pm - 11pm

Meanwhile, sound-wizard Jamie Newman is set to give your ears a loving "Chinese burn" with his twisted tropicalia, Afro-fun, and miscellaneous party-poppers! 11pm - close

Saturday 11th February ~ DJs The Big E & Les Boulevardiers
Those in the know will remember The Big E from his days sharing the lounge-love on 95bFM. It's time for The Big E to come out of Rambo-on-a-mountain style retirement, and show us the true power of easy listening, exotica, and white wine spritzers. 8pm - 11pm

Exiled from Paris for a crime they actually did commit, Les Boulevardiers are forced to take on any odd jobs they can to survive, including DJing this Saturday at The Golden Dawn. Luckily these two rascals are well versed in the ways of disco, off-kilter pop, and The Funky Monkey.. 11pm - close

Sunday 12th February ~ Christoph El Truento & friends
Fresh from releasing a tasty 12" at Conch the other night, this Sunday Christoph and his happy gang are treating us to an evening of weird-a-tronica, mutant jazz, psychic-folk, and whatever else happens to flow from their collective consciousness at the time. Yummo! 5pm - late

Also... look what's coming up!
