Good Times For Hard Times (Wed 27 - Sun 31 July)

Wednesday 27th July
DJs Lawrence & Hanns Arabia 8pm - close
Everybody's favourite tag-team are back in "da house", for a night of high-class tunery. Mr Lawrence Arabia & Ms Hanns Arabia never pack light, and in this instance have promised a healthy dose of exotic, erotic and most often dance-worthy music from all across the plains of time and geography. Why not make this the happiest night of your life? There's nothing standing in your way.

Thursday 28th July

Yam Jams! 8pm - midnight
The legendary Yam Jammers are returning to The Tavern Of Power for another bout of block-rocking-r&b-psychedelic-soul-funk-hop-reggae-rockn'roll! If you've been party to one of the Yam Jams parties, you'll know full well that your ears are in for a treat. For newcomers, well, get ready to be served aural gems by the best in the beezwax (business).

Phoebe Fox & Ricky Maymi (Brian Jonestown Massacre) 12am - 2am
So guess what?! Steve Kilbey from The Church and Brian Jonestown Massacre's Ricky Maymi are here in Auckland playing a gig. Further to that, Mr Maymi, and his dear friend - the ever excellent DJ Phoebe Fox - have agreed to pop down after the show to get tiddly and spin some tunes with us. Got a problem with that?

Friday 29th July
DJ Jon Bywater 8pm - 11pm
Last time Mr Bywater was in the building / courtyard, there was a frenzy unleashed on our dancefloor / dance-concrete that's rarely been matched. Howling old souls leapt from the speakers, chased by acid-fuelled rockabilly merchants, jazzed up spooks and angular pop tarts. I still can't figure out if the dancefloor was so crazy cause of the tunes or cause Bywater is so dang handsome.

DJ Chewie Lewis 11pm - 2am
This devious punk is probably more famous for bringing down Winston Peters in the famous "ThingeeGate" scandal, but make no mistake, Chewie Lewis is one to watch. We're pleased as punch to have him back diddling our dials, turning our cogs, and making music sound young again. Amen brother.

Saturday 30th July
Dolly Party & Lord Sebastien Flyte 8pm - 11pm
Freshly returned from their "Round The World in 80 Days" type balloon adventure, it's the impossibly well dress twosome that know how best to shimmy while we shake! Dolly has promised to bring a selection of her newly acquired vintage cake tins, while Lord Seb-Fly has procured a new kind of Moroccan hair-wax that allows his quiff to ride all the higher. Rad!

Mr Crawley 11pm - 2am

Sunday 31st July
Locally Left Debate 5.30pm - 7.30pm
With Jacinda Ardern (Labour MP)
David Slack (Political Commentator)
& Patrick Reynolds (Photographer)

All riled up about ‘the Man’ reigning down on you, think it’s time the world knew your views on politics…..or just want a pint and a bit of a laugh? Have all your needs catered for at Locally Left, a political pub debate with a panel of locals talking about all the recent happenings in the world of politics….and the world generally.

This week will feature a bit of chat about capital gains tax, transport in our city (yes it’s crap, but what do we do about it?) and what’s been happening on the international scene. BYO opinion!

My Dream Line-Up For The Golden Dawn:

Wednesday 20th July
Les Boulevardiers 8pm - close
Introducing Les Boulevardiers, a disco-funk spinning duo from right here in Auckland. One of our very own handsome bartenders James Millar and his delightful high school pal Oscar Buitendijk. We have got them spinning everything to old classic disco to re-edit funk to indie electronica. Should be blast. See you there ;)

Thursday 21st July
DJs Nigel Love & Murry Sweetpants 8pm - close
Ponsonby's favourite sons, Murry and Nigel are no strangers to the Dawn by now. Here to make your Thursday afternoon->evening->nights all the better, this danger-duo between them somehow manage to have more music at their fingertips than has in fact ever been recorded. We're as confused as you are, but also excited at the prospect of this two-for-one package at the decks!

Friday 22nd July
DJ Duke Wellington 8pm - 11pm
Riding his dappled pony back into town like the shabby royal he is, Duke Wellington is back, replete with a satchel of shellac that will twiddle the knobs of those after work drinkers like nobody's business. With this one-man jazzy gypsy jaunty jukebox, navigating Friday evening will now be a painless operation.

Stu & Jenna’s Blue Light Disco 11pm - 2am
Blue Light Disco Stu is back! This time he's joined by the inimitable Jenna - bedecked in one of her trademark Amazing Outfits - for a rollicking good time of a set, certain to have the concrete wet with your dancing sweat. We've fished out our $25 second hand police light for the occasion, even.

Saturday 23rd July
Talor & Dave 8pm - 11pm
A couple of fun loving guys, the likely lads, double trouble, etc... Talor and Dave will be familiar faces for anyone who spends more than a casual amount of time at the Dawn, and it's high time the two of them were set loose upon our turntables. Expect 60s rock, acid fuelled psychedelia, and just a little bit of cheeky party time pop.

DJ KreitsKreator 11pm - 2am
The mysterious DJ KreitsKreator left his native Amsterdam for Auckland about a year ago to swap the miserable brown leaves for fresh green ones. Leaves don’t really turn brown here so he decided to stay. Coming from a place with loads of anarchists, KreitsKreator mixes it all up: afrobeat, jump blues, wave, tropicália, psych, swamp funk, space jazz, aquacrunk, calypso, rumba and whatnot. Get ready to lose it when this mouthwatering collection spills all over our floor!

Sunday 24th July
The Golden Dawn's Staff Selections! 5pm til close
Here at The Golden Dawn - Tavern Of Power, we refuse to hire anyone that doesn't have at least one party trick. What good is the ability to make the perfect cocktail if you can't play Beethoven on the nose flute? Or make doves appear out of your belly button? Or sing a heartwrenching tune? Well, consider this the first of many exciting Variety Show evenings where we let our staff loose on the decks, stage, and dress up box... for your entertainment as much as theirs.

The other things happenings besides Harry Potter:

Wednesday 13th July
DJ Jack Beanstalk All night long...
Despite being called Jack, this DJ is the giant in our fairytale - easily the tallest DJ we've ever had in the house. I'm slightly worried that he's not going to fit in our DJ booth, actually. In any case - Jack loves to party, and with any luck, so do you. See you cuties there.
~
Thursday 14th July
DJ Eighteenth Century Pest 8pm - close
After lying dead in an empty room for the past three hundred years, The Eighteenth Century Pest has risen again, and this Thursday will be spinning lots of early 80's French / Euro New Wave through to The Shangri-Las' Past, Present, Future to Robot in Hospital (Japanese Punk '79) and some singing dogs. And more. Kewl.

~
Friday 15th July - $5.00 entry from 8pm
Megalex is from Wellington and he does freestyle raps. Last time he played at Golden Dawn, the crowd got him to drop verses on the topics of: Yetis, Skiing, John Key, Beyonce Knowles and the Chernobyl disaster. Among others. Studiously avoiding irony and novelty, Megalex seeks to share the joy of real rap with all people.
~
He shall be ably supporting with soothing bangers and cushioning dope jams by the lovely DJs Leisurewear & hopped up party-zingers Tumeke & The Wallrus. This means the whole night will go BUMP. Like a dude in a TRUNK. The show shall cost a mere $5 and you are highly encouraged to come along, have fun and think up topics for a dude to rap about.

~

Saturday 16th July
DJs Kiki & Rory 8pm - 11pm

When they're not engaging other couples in Fight Club: The Dating Editiion, Kiki and Rory are honing their DJing skills. Rory recently completed a course in "snapping his fingers along to garage rock'n'roll", whilst Kiki is nearly finished her diploma in "knowing exactly how much time she has before a song finishes to go and dance with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth". Don't miss this sassy double act.
~
DJ Tony Tunes 11pm - 2am

They call him Tony Tunes for a good reason. Firstly, his name is Tony, and secondly... he knows a buttload about good tunes. He's the host of 95bFM's Totally Wired new music show, so his fingers are smeared all over the pulse like you wouldn't believe. He's charming, he's intelligent, and he's a lot of fun to be around.
~
Sunday 17th July - $10.00 entry from 7pm

Fresh from receiving an APRA Professional Development Award, glittering NZ songstress Miriam Clancy is bringing her songs, guitar and a retro sequencer to the Golden Dawn this Sunday!

These will be a unique show, with Miriam road-testing new songs and playing material from her critically acclaimed 2009 album Magnetic. This will be your last chance to see her on home-turf for some time as she departs for New York, America to being recording a brand new album with one of the world’s most exciting producer/engineers, Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio, Grizzly Bear, Santigold
).

Miriam will be joined by the now-familiar special guest Andrew Keoghan, whose album Arctic Tales Divide has charmed critics and music lovers all over the damn place. It's gonna be a special evening!

Jul 5, 2011

Calm down... it's just another amazing week of music at... The Golden Dawn - Tavern of Power

Wednesday 6th July
DJ Dylan Cherry (Rekkit) 8pm - close
The young man who's already made a name for himself running clubnights and DJing around the place is making his way to our decks at last. With a passion for local tunes and twisted indie fun, Mr Cherry's debut at the decks is set to be a corker.
*
Thursday 7th July
Josh On Decks 8pm - close
From hepcat jazz-man to southern rocker to funky fellow in seamless style, it can only be one man: Josh On Decks. Having this dapper gent back at the helm for a Thursday night couldn't be finer news, and we just know you're going to have a decent time.
*
Friday 8th July
Dj Steve Newall vs The Kingsland Vinyl Appreciation Society 8pm - 2am
One of our favourite residents, Mr Newall brings the cheeky rock'n'roll sauce that most parties sorely lack these days. Now, he faces his greatest challenge yet: keeping up with the debut Dawn appearance of powerhouse record-fiends The Kingsland Vinyl Appreciation Society. It's going to get dirty, and it's going to get fun.
*
Saturday 9th July
LIVE: HUG (Haven Uke Group) 8pm
Playing reasonably early for about an hour, mainly because there's no-one in the band under 70, Golden Dawn brings you HUG - a non-ironic ukelele experience. Tired of trendy Ukelele blowhards? HUG or Haven Ukelele Group are the real deal. They've been around longer than the Stones, look half as young and hail from the far reaches of the Pacific - yes, even Beachhaven.

HUG play GD this Saturday night from 8PM. Be on time or Grandma will give you a flick with the Sasa. HUG will be joined by DJ Dr David Perry, for an hour-long set of island gems!

plus DJ Jamie Newman 10pm - late
Mr Newman's expertise in the field of afro-latin-party-popping-psychedelia-infused-rock'n'roll-etc is truly deep and wonderful. It's been far too long since this handsome man graced us with his presence, so be sure to pass by our window for aural goodness and some delicious devil-water!
*
Sunday 10th July
DJ Jubt 5pm - late
If it's jazzy, snazzy or reggazzly (maybe even vajazzly), Jubt has sniffed it out, and most likely will be bedazzling you with it this Sundazzlay. There's nothing quite like a Sunday at the Golden Dawn (Tavern of Power), so come spend some hazy afternoon-evening time being treated to sweethearted table service, heaters and blankets, and a lovely jubbly bit of Jubt.
