Tuesday 1st March

DJ Bakervision 1967
If Senor Bakervision had to choose an animal to be, he'd be an Animal Man... And he's here to prove it. Tonight you're going to learn a new dance, the sort that will make your parents think that morality has come to a bitter end. Uh huh.
8pm - 11.30

Wednesday 2nd March

Shady and the Tramp
Ladies and hounds... introducing the cutest pair of DJ mutts you ever will see. They just love getting their paws on dirty rock'n'roll, rascally country, and the swinging sounds of yesteryear. Bow WOW. Woof.
8pm - 11.30

Thursday 3rd March

A Very Special Evening with Peter Bäcker LIVE!

Berlin's very own silver suited superstar DJ and performance artist will be treating us to a couple of hours worth of good times, courtesy of his 1974 portable soundsystem. Expect suckful pop hits matched with tasteless spandex, and enjoy what he promises to include "moderation, entertainment and interaction".

Also joining Mr Bäcker this evening will be the greatest comedian to ever live (now that the Ernest Goes To Camp guy is dead)... Mr Joseph Harper.

Not to mention the DJing talents of the mysterious half-Scottish mega-babe and potato chip expert Vinnie Gaga!

Times not specified, just show up and enjoy yourself

Friday 4th March

DJ Bobby Johnson
The debut appearance from seasoned wunder-boy DJ Bobby Johnson! Joy Division spars with Sam Cooke. Elvis Costello dances with Marvin Gaye. The Cramps stare Dusty Springfield in the eye... and don't we just love it!
8pm - 11pm

The Young Pretender
Having escaped the clutches of Real Life some time ago, The Young Pretender has been wandering the globe for some centuries now, slowly but surely collecting the songs of the Earth as he goes. Mainly soul tunes and Scottish 80s pop, but you know, a wide variety still... Anyway, if you can't dance when the Young Pretender spins, your feet must be a pair of jerks.
11pm - close

Saturday 5th March

**7pm** Just confirmed - An early performance by Lyttleton's sound artist Peter Wright - who will be joined by the legendary Pumice. Details will be published as they come to light, but this will double as a fundraiser!

Later...

A very special solo performance by Tono (of Tono & His Finance Company)
They call him the Morrissey of Mosgiel, don't you know. Make sure you're here around 10pm for this charmer. Meanwhile...

DJ Hayden East
Fresh from "feeding the koalas" in Melbourne, Mr East is returning just in time to spill his favourite tunes all over the floor. Not only a handsome devil, Hayden is also a fine decision maker, when it comes to the world of picking which tunes to play when. You're in safe hands.
8pm - 11.00pm

DJ Phoebe Falconer
Always a special treat when La Dama de Cabello Blanco del Rock & Roll - aka Phoebe Falconer - rolls into town. Make no mistake, with Ms Falconer at the helm, this night will have you covered in motorcycle grease before you know it.
11pm - close

Sunday 6th March

DJs Hannah & Aaron
It's here at last! The heartwarming sequel to the family classic "The Last Time Hannah and Aaron DJed at the Golden Dawn". They made you swoon with their love song soul, they made you shake a leg at the puppy power of some 50s pop, and boy-o-boy, did they make you think about the good times. They're back, to replicate that same feeling once more.
5pm - late

Meanwhile... Have you tried anything from our new menu? My personal highlight would have to be the Welsh Rarebit. Cheese dreams for everyone! Keep your eyes peeled - our menu will be uploaded here very shortly!

Wednesday 23rd February

Dj Jeans Wilder
Karate master / vegetable spotter. Psychedelic sounds to ward off rain and bad people. Pass it on.
8pm - 11.30

Thursday 24th February

YAMJAM DJs - Jonny Elbo & Casual B
Experts through and through. If there's a tune not worth spinning, they will not spin it. They will throw it in the rubbish, and only spin tunes worth spinning. Everything from The 3Ds to D'Angelo. Believe me, they's good.
8pm - close

Friday 25th February

Dj Tom Henry
Tall, pale, and handsome. Be ready for love the way it used to be made. With extra sequins.

8pm - 11pm

Goldenaxe DJs
Two men! One silver path to follow! You just never know what you're gonna get, but not like a box of chocolates. More like a pick-a-path book by that guy. Deathtrap Dungeon. Also forked lightning meets dog's tail. You'll see.

11pm - close

DJ Paydirt
Self-described as "What happens when your parents let you stay up late as a child". Fela Kuti to Morrissey in 3 easy hour-steps.

Gypsy jazz, Tom Waits, blues rawness, and a raised eyebrow or two. Settle in for the afternoon with Shimmy, and leave a better human for it.

Who Do You Love More?

Feb 14, 2011

So Golden, So Powerful (15th - 20th Feb)

TUESDAY 15th - DJ PhoonTang: Lil PhoonTang has been a part of the independent music underground since she got kicked out of church for listening to ESG on her Sony Walkman. Following that, she set about procuring some of the finest in indie, rock'n'roll, and party music available to man (or woman). She has recently returned from a trip to Malaysia, during which she bought some exciting candy and pined for her pending DJ set at the Golden Dawn back home. Your time has come, PhoonTang. 8pm - late

WEDNESDAY 16th - DJs House & Garden and Custard Square:
These two literally can't tell the difference between a beach towel and "an awesome cape", but it's that childlike innocence and bravado that cause us to love them so. Last time they were here they not only played Hall & Oates, but also Kraftwerk and some other crap. We've let them back mostly because of the towel thing. 8pm - late

THURSDAY 17th - DJ Josh on Decks with Captain Carson's Live Poetry Experience: Now here's a good thing! Josh On Decks is an old sailor friend of mine... I'm not saying we were pirates, but we certainly sailed a few seas and brought back a few treasures. My treasure was mostly wristwatches and sample pots of paint, but Josh On Decks brought back a selection of records - the size and quality of which had never been seen here before, and has not since. Thank God he's playing this Thursday, is all I can say.

Josh is joined by his old friend, the salty Captain Carson! Himself a recently published author, Carson will be telling us tales and regaling us with poetry that will indeed make us laugh, make us smile, and also potentially cry. Wonderful. 8pm - late (poetry starts 9pm)

FRIDAY 18th

DJ Andrew Tidball:
Of course! I knew this had to happen. I can't stay away from the Tidball charm for long, and so I crumbled. After I swore I'd never do this again, we're seeing each other (musically) again. He's just... so good. It's always so satisfying... You'll see. 8pm - 11pm

DJ Tina Turntables: I can't say the name of this wondrous woman without spilling superlatives all over the places. Quite simply, as you know, she's one of the best in town when it comes to spinning the discs, and I'm pleased as puncho that she's agreed to come back again. Amen sister. 11pm - close

SATURDAY 19th

DJ Ben Anderson:
Hey look, Ben's back everyone! He's the one with the winning smile and the crates upon crates full of jazzual soul and funky fun, not to mention a buttload of disco-o-oh! Not only is Senor Anderson a talented disc jockey, he also happens to front a wonderful band called the Living Diamonds. Check this special stuff out: www.myspace.com/thelivingdiamonds 8pm - 11pm

Mr Crawley: Right now, Mr Crawley is wearing a captain's hat. It's the middle of the day. It's this kind of self-aggrandising behaviour that has gotten him to the lucrative position of "second to last DJ for the week" time and time again. Of a melancholy disposition naturally, it's up to his long suffering Uncle Pierre to drag Mr Crawley kicking and screaming to the turntables time and time again, before he eventually realises just how much he loves helping you party. 11pm - close

SUNDAY 20th - Papa Dave Taylor:
Papa Dave returns, and this time he means punk rock business.. Actually, he means all sorts of things. From country rock'n'roll to psychedelic jams, to the aforementioned jangly punk rock - Papa Dave is set to be your soundtrack for the Holy Day. Recommended accompaniment: cider. 5pm - late

If you'd like to DJ or perform at the Golden Dawn: Tavern Of Power, simply shoot us an email over at strangenews[at]gmail.com. Ask for Moondoggy.

Profundo Rosso, aka what happens on the Mondays when we are closed.

The Hunt For The Golden Dawn!

TUESDAY the 8TH of FEBRUARY til SUNDAY the 13th

Tuesday 8th - SOBROMO DJs: These two muppets were in my dream last night, threatening to spin sun-warped club hits, scuzzy surf jams, shoegaze heartaches and college radio hits of the early to mid 90s. And other stuff you can dance to. I was like, yeah, cool. 8pm - close

Wednesday 9th:

DJ Murray Cammick:
Not all of our DJs have their own Wikipedia page... certainly not all of them are noted as "a significant figure in New Zealand popular music since the late 1970s". Murray Cammick is a bit of a legend, and his record collection is "formidable", as the French would say. He's graced the airwaves at both bFM and George, founded Rip It Up magazine, released some of the most important local music on his record label(s), and more recently was handpicked to DJ support for Paul Weller. No big deal then. 8pm - close

Andrew Keoghan (solo):
As few words as possible should describe this man's music - his dream-inducing violin playing (looped over and over into heady and dramatic lullabies) is matched only by his heart-melting voice. I've said too much. 9.30pm (20 min set)

Thursday 10th - DJ Julien Dyne & special friends: He's back for another round of fermented honey and goat's cheese! Mr Julien Dyne thought DJing would be a great excuse to sidle on up to the Golden Dawn again, sporting crates of soul, African beats, and outlandish jazz from his vaults. You know that whatever Senor Dyne does, it's gon' be good.8pm - close

Friday 11th:

DJ Barney Von Pavement:
The Baron of Tunes himself is here for a long-time listener, first time caller appearance! Having covered every happening thing to hit the airwaves for the past umpteen years, Barney (founder of the famously infamous Pavement magazine) certainly knows his music. With any luck, he'll be spinning everything from Joy Division rarities to French disco and beyond. Kewl. 8pm - 11pm

Carter Pearce: The Thin White Duke makes his first appearance! With a dangerously fine collection of grimy rock'n'roll and tunes for good times, we defy you not to fall into a hazy pit of wonder as Carter spins his divinyl for your aural enjoyment. Shoobedoobee. 11pm - 2am

Saturday 12th:

Roger The Money:
I was all like, "Hey Brant, what kind of music are you going to play on Saturday? How best shall I describe you?" and he was like, "Like a Griffins Sampler box, but without the Shortbread", and that was good enough for me. 8pm - 11pm

Little Baker Johnny: He's like a cat in a milk factory when it comes to spinning records at our Tavern of Power, is our Johnny. Last time he was at the helm, we had a record number of toes tapping on the concrete dancefloor - so he's back to try and emulate the thrill of that evening once more. Bring your best party pants.

Sunday 13th - Mr Adam: Oh la la, Mr Adam is back. Literally obsessed with Sunday evenings, Mr Adam has spent his entire life crafting the perfect sound for a nice afternoontime lounging in our oh-so-charming courtyard. If you don't know it's Sunday when Mr Adam is playing, it's not Sunday. 5pm - late
