The Golden Dawn's Big Adventure (Tues 25 - Sun 30 Jan)

Tuesday 25th: Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck, Canada) & Graham Panther (Panther & the Zoo)

As the frontman for Canadian noise-pop gang Holy Fuck, Brian Borcherdt is all about making sounds sound big, krazy and awesome. Tonight, Brian's going to be breaking hearts instead with his super sensitive sing-songs. I like both, so that's all good. Graham Panther (minus the And The Zoo) will be crooning aforehand, singing songs about what it's like to think too much and be extremely handsome.

Wednesday 26th: DJ Bebo

The arcane master of candy-cane popplegum party times, DJ Bebo has been known to moonlight as one half of the Brunettes (hint: not the purty girly one), drum for the ridiculous soul neuf-tet The Cosbys, and sport three-buttoned suit jackets whenever the heck he wants to. The new King Of Pop, DJ Bebo is totally down with the kids, but also understands the tender heart of an old fashioned ballad.

Thursday 27th: 47 Diamantes (live) & Lady Falcon-Eyes (DJset)

Wellington's Man and Lady Boss of PARTYING - aka Kelvin and G-Fab - aka 47 Diamantes - are here to give our speakers a little rattling with their electro-fun good times something dancefloor something something extreme 2000. The point is, come check out their amazing style and bring the party inside for a change. I'm serious, dude.

DJ Lady Falcon-Eyes is one half of the DJ duo Red Falcon, who have been getting quite a bit of "attention" lately from "people" who like "great music". You can listen to her on Tuesday Drive on 95bFM, or you can actually come and witness her DJing fitness in the actual real life flesh. Or do both?

Friday 28th: The Young Pretender (Scotland) & DJs House and Garden + Custard Square

The Young Pretender was also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, figurehead of the Jacobite uprising which led to the Scottish Highland clearances - and eventually Dunedin and Waipu.

French / Italian in origin, The Young Pretender tried to claim the throne of the British Isles but failed (due to being a terrible commander) and at 5'5" was not the most able of warriors. He fled the English army disguised as a Irish maid, and is here to DJ for us this Friday evening.

DJs House and Garden and Custard Square are actually two hard out gang members from this gang in Berlin. One is a serious pig trainer and the other dresses up really nice for a day job. The two of them sometimes play in a band called An Emerald City, but mostly they spend time shoplifting, high fiving, and downloading krautrock gems to DJ at The Golden Dawn this Friday.

Saturday 29th: DJs Automatic & Uncle Barnie

After playing records to the rain-soaked post-Big Day Out punters last Friday night, we've had to make all sorts of false promises to Automatic about Iggy Pop showing up this Saturday in order to lure him back. Expect soul, blues, rocksteady, soul, and soul (and soul) to lighten up your Saturday evening and get you ready to dance. If you are going to dance, though, please don't do it in the toilets.

Uncle Barnie is our favourite Uncle. A long time listener, first time caller at the Golden Dawn - Barnie is in fact fresh back from Ghana, where he spent days and days holed up in a small dusty room trying to decide which 1983 African disco 45s to bring back. He made it back with crates bulging, and he's here this Saturday to ease the pressure by sharing the sounds around.

Sunday 30th: DJ Mr Crawley and special friends

It's a public holiday, and even we're not working on Monday - so come in from 4pm to hang out with Mr Crawley and his merry men and merry ladies. They will play music, you will have a wonderful time. That is all.

xo

Meanwhile...

Tavern Of Power's Triumph (Tues 18th - Sun 23rd January)

A new era is upon us. These are trying times, but if we are wise and stay focused... Good will prevail over Evil at last. At least, that's what we're hoping will happen with this week's lineup. Check it out.

Tuesday 18th: Mr Aaron Yap + Ms Hannah Sarney - As two of 95bFM's most eclectic hosts, Aaron and Hannah have outright refused to confirm what they'll be unleashing on our ears this evening. Rumours of strictly "weather themed tunes" are flying about, but that could have just been a misunderstanding. I suspect tonight will be fun.

Wednesday 19th: Lubin Rains (live and loose) with special friends - This troubled soul can't stop from wandering. And he's promised to wander all the way up from the valley to The Golden Dawn: Tavern Of Power. A singer of the types of songs that will ache you and break you, but with the best intentions, Lubin Rains is the Irish fighter and Grey Lynn rebel gone good, then gone bad, then gone good. If you're lucky he might just make you cry (while you party).

Thursday 20th: The worst DJs in the world, just forget about it - There's nothing special happening at all. Nothing to see here. Come back tomorrow or yesterday.

Friday 21st: DJ Automatic + Mr Crawley - This Friday, being that of the Big Day in which everyone is Out, we're becoming an orphanage for those left behind. From evening til thick night, the Princes of Soul - DJs Automatic & Mr Crawley (Back on the Good Foot hosts, 95bFM) will be making it their task to keep you entertained and distracted, with everything you ever wanted to know about SOUL but were afraid to ask. We'll keep you cool until the hordes arrive, and then it's time to party.

Saturday 22nd: Baron Win & DJ Wallrus plus Samuel Hamilton

Having once been accused by DJ Wallrus of not knowing who Ringo Starr was, Baron Win (hailing from London, Ontario, Canada) set about learning all the dark arts of music, in the hope that one day he could prove his friend wrong and show off a knowledge of music so vast that it would be compared to the size of impressive lakes. From Black Sabbath to the Black Lips, the Beatles to the stirring soundtracks of films like Ghostbusters and Indiana Jones (and the Lost Ark)... this set will doubtless crush your mind into a pulp, or at least "rock".

Sam Hamilton was a smash hit last Sunday when he played an extraordinary set to a humble crowd about about ten people. But those ten people have told ten people, and those ten people have told ten people, and now the whole world knows that if you want doo-wop ballads, mixed in with messed up party hits, mixed in with pretty pretty drones mixed in with Peruvian funk... well it's Sam Hamilton you need to talk to. Welcome back Sam!

Sunday 23rd: Mr Pinkwhistle's Secret Diary Of Sound - Much has been written about this mysterious character, and much has been swept under the carpet. The tunes you will hear this Unholy Sunday will take you to places that very few have dared to tread - from the jungles of yesterday to the sinister electronic torture chambers of tomorrow, from pink Heaven to purple Hades, and from Wigan to Hamilton. All in one tune. What's up next? Only Pinkwhistle knows.

The Golden Dawn's Revenge (Tues 11th - Sun 16th January)

Good day, good evening one and all. The Grandmaster has unveiled this week's happenings for all to see. Looks like another good one at the Tavern of Power...

Tuesday 11th: Peace Sampras - DJ Peace Sampras (one half of the theoretical Rose Quartz DJ duo) will be spinning obscuro/"lost" 80s pop and disco in the vein of scritti politti, boy meets girl, phil collins as well as modern-world wonders such as Games, Teengirl Fantasy, Greatest Hits, The Samps. Peace Sampras is a handsome boy, too.

Wednesday 12th: Lord Sebstian Flyte - The first time I saw this gentleman spinning 45s at a scummy little house in the city, I quickly donned a bejewelled fez and started chucking plastic flowers into the air as my winklepickers took control. 50s and 60s pop have never sounded so good.

Thursday 13th: Julien Dyne & Jeremy Toy with Heart Attack Alley

Julien and Jeremy are seasoned experts in the field of funk, soul, jazzy-good-ness and African rarities, and have agreed to come lecture us via turntable in their ways.

Heart Attack Alley are a three-piece raw blues gang fronted by the timelessly voiced sassy scoundrel Caoimhe Macfehin, ably assisted on guitar by the artiste Kristal G, and escorted into blues harp territory by Dr Karl Steven. This will be our first live performance at the Tavern, so don't be late! They start at 9pm...ish.

Friday 14th: Andrew Tidball
- This man needs no introduction, so I'm wasting my time telling you that Tidball is the Godfather of all things Music in Auckland City. Born on English soil, his mother decided to share him with us here so that he could duly share his wealth of old soul, proper good indie tunes, rock'n'roll from the garage, and neon orange 80s funk. This man will put the cheese on your toast.

Saturday 15th: Hayden East & Papa Dave Taylor

Papa Dave Taylor is a man of many hats. He has promised to wear his cowboy hat to this particular party (commanding the station from 8pm - 11pm) with a set full of nothing but good old country music. Hot dawg, get ready to take your partner and dosey-do, or even slaughter your enemy with an old fashioned Western duel. Pistols at Dawn! Get it?

Senor East (at the decks from 11pm - 2am) has recently returned from his travels across the globe, where his fingers, throat and lips were used to great effect, night after night, as the multi-instrumentalist and angel voiced every-man in Lawrence Arabia. He's back again to while away the summer spinning songs to make you feel good. He loves Otis Redding and he plays casual cricket in the park on Sundays.

Sunday 16th: Sam Hamilton (DJ set)
- Having travelled to the Amazon with the set purpose of recording the sounds found in the wild there, there's no doubt that Sam Hamilton is going to put the C in Curiosities this Sunday as he spins everything from frog matings calls to the sound of the wind shuffling across the hairy legs of the Peruvian Bird Spider. He'll also be dishing out a healthy dose of Indonesian pop, Cumbia from the villages, and Spandau Ballet.

The Return Of The Golden Dawn

What's on at the Tavern of Power this week? Well, after consulting Grandmaster Moondog, I can reveal the following...

Wednesday 5th: The Return To Power - your host and musical Rain Man, Mr Crawley will be spinning the songs that make the whole world smile. And also the songs that make the world a little creeped out. In a good way.

Thursday 6th: Tina Turntables - you know her by name, she's amazing. The mistress of soul. If you can't dance when Tina is around, I'm afraid our floor might just not be your thing...

Friday 7th: Hannah Sarney & Lia Kent - Spinning everything from Sam Cooke to Swedish pop to Bobby Womack to Roy Orbison to the Cookie Monster to Nick Cave to the Raveonettes... these two fine feathered ladies are also very charming.

Saturday 8th: Dr Karl Steven - Educated in Cambridge, England, Dr Karl spins tropical beach party sounds in the early evening, before showing off an impressive collection of rockabilly, surfabilly and silly billy into the night

Sunday 9th: Mr Adam - spotted once upon a time in Verona spinning Nina Simone's version of "Here Comes The Sun" before slipping into a jazzy little Calexico remix, Adam has since become known for being Mr Ooonst Ooonst. He is here this Sunday once again to defy what we think we know of him. Yummy Sunday time.
